Patrick Coyne Inspires! Lead Image

Last night the owner, editor and creative mastermind of Communication Arts, Patrick Coyne, spoke to a group of local creatives at the Shakespeare Theatre in Orlando. He spoke about the rich history of the magazine: from it’s inventive, yet humble beginnings, to it’s emergence as a major publication. He presented some of his favorite work from the magazine, and described the chaos in their office that occurs with the CA competitions.

The presentation was very informative and inspirational, but I believe the one thing that stuck with me the most was a comment during the Q&A session. This comment was made by the Creative Director of Publix Supermarkets, Tim Cox. He thanked Patrick. He thanked him for the years of inspiration. For the dedication to the community and the publication. That when he got the magazine in the mail, it gave him an opportunity to escape the daily grind.

This statement stuck with me, because I share that feeling. It made me realize that most of the creatives that subscribe to that publication feel the same way. When you see that cardboard box it’s like a holiday. Really, it’s like a present: you have to tear it open, and you never know what’s going to be inside. Maybe that’s one of the reasons we keep them for decades. They’re special. I know I rarely reference my CA magazines from more than 7 years ago, but I’ve got them. And, it will be a tough day when I decide I have to get rid of some of them.

When Tim thanked Patrick, I realized that I take all of that for granted. I never thought about the work that goes into it. I never realized how much they really meant to me. Thank you Patrick, and thank you Tim.

And, thank you to Sarah and the Orlando AIGA, you continue to outdo yourselves.
