BarcampMiami and FOWA 2009
We traveled down to Miami for their “Tech Week” which kicked off with BarCamp Miami, then continued with Future Of Web Apps and concluded with We Media. We had to skip We Media but we did get to partake in the first two.
BarcampMiami
BarcampMiami was bigger than I expected. There were over a hundred people packed into the courtyard of the Anokha. Running parallel with WordCamp and NewsInnovation probably helped attendance a bit.

There were people from all over the country as well as a few international travelers. The talks I attended were pretty good, but as the day went on the open environment plus the amount of people plus the Miami heat made things a bit uncomfortable. Still overall it was a positive, inspiring experience which I think is what you’re supposed to get out of a BarCamp. Kudos to @brianbreslin and @alexdc for doing a stellar job organizing the whole thing.
It definitely made me want to participate in the upcoming BarCampOrlando. I’m going to give a talk and I’m trying to talk a couple more from our team to do the same. Speaking of BarCampOrlando, registration is still open so if you haven’t registered yet and you’re going to be in town you should come.
Future Of Web Apps
The common concensus from everyone I spoke to was that FOWA was an overwhelming success.

Videos of the sessions will be posted to the FOWA site soon but some of the highlights were @garyvee’s talk and 280 North showing Atlas.
Atlas looks interesting for sure, but I’ll reserve judgment until I can have a look at the beta. At first glance it reminds me of Adobe’s catalyst. People seem to like Cappuccino though so I’m pretty sure it will be a hit when it finally does launch.
The FOWA after party was a blast, we got a chance to hang out with @schlichmegs from Frank Worldwide and she introduced us to some of the local talent. We didn’t get to stay as late as we’d have liked though since we were heading back that night.
All in all it was a great trip and it seems like there is a great tech community in South Florida. We plan on heading back soon to check out one of their monthly Refresh meetings. If you get a chance to attend a Barcamp or a FOWA I’d definitely recommend it.
